Cuttack: A youth took money in advance from the family of a girl on the promise of marriage and also in order to support his education but tied the knot with another damsel after he got a job.
The incident came to light after the girl, who hails from Jobra Canal Road in the city, approached the Malgodown police Saturday seeking justice. She accused T Tejeswar of betraying her, after having promised to get engaged in a state of matrimony.
According to the girl who is the complainant, Tejeswar met her at a wedding party in 2016 and took the instant decision to tie the knot with her. The family members of the youth also agreed to the marriage.
However, the girl was 17-year-old then, prompting both the families to decide on solemnising the wedding after she attained adulthood in 2017.
During that time, Tejeswar was staying in Bhubaneswar and preparing for the civil services examinations. The hapless girl has alleged that he took around Rs 1.55 lakh in cash from her family on several occasions as “advance dowry’’ to support his study and also to fulfil his promise of marriage.
During the course of his study, it was learnt that Tejeswar told the girl’s family that he had got a job and was hence moving to Hyderabad. But what turned out, much to the shock of the girl and her family, was that Tejeswar had got married to another girl and had blissfully settled in the southern city, sources said.
When the girl’s family came to know about Tejeswar’s marriage and subsequent settlement in Hyderabad, they felt “broken and cheated’’ and asked him to return the money that was said to have totalled up to around Rs 1.55 lakh. However, Tejeswar did not return the money, the sources added.
“We have registered a case in this regard and are inquiring into the matter,” said Malgodown inspector-in-charge Debi Prasanna Patra.
