Bhubaneswar: Akash Mohapatra emerged champion of the Ist All Orissa Open 6-Red Balls Snooker Championships after beating Soubhagya Barik 7-3 in the final at the Vintage Club here Sunday.
In the final clash of best of 13 Frames Akash started well and established a swift lead of 3-0 by dominating the show. In turn Soubhagya came back and mannaged scores of 1-3, 1-4 and 2-4. Akash shot a frame more to make the lead 5-2. Soubhagya again narrowed the margin by a frame setting the score to 3-5. But eventually Akash fought back to win comprehensively.
Cash award
Orissa Government announced cash awards of Rs 5,00,000 each for sprinters Dutee Chand and Jauna Murmu as an incentive for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in London.
KISS triumph
KISS emerged champions in the girls’ categories of the All India U-17 Club Rugby Sevens Championships after beating Jungle Crows, Kolkata in the final at the Hi-tech Medical and Hospital Ground here Sunday. In the boys’ category Jungle Crows clinched the title after beating state team Future Hope.
Emphatic wins
Sikkim, Delhi, Kerala and Jharkhand won their respective matches convincingly in the Junior National Girls’ Football Championship at different grounds in Cuttack, Sunday.
At the Barabati Stadium Sikkim spanked Andhra Pradesh 5-1 in the first match, while Delhi drubbed Madhya Pradesh by 5-0.
At the Orissa Police Ground Kerala scripted a convincing 4-0 win over Uttarakhand and Jharkhand thrashed Karnataka by 5-0.
Chess tourney
Orissa State Chess Association (OSCA) will organise the IInd Rabi Narayan Dash Memorial Inter-School Open chess championship at Little Star Play School here starting August 6. Students up to class XII can participate in this tournament. Prizes will be given to the players occupying the top 15 positions.
