Bhubaneswar, Nov 28: Amitanshu Priyadarshan of DAV Public School, Unit-VIII emerged champion in the VIIth Schools’ Open Chess Championships, which concluded here Saturday.
Amitanshu remained invincible in the tournament and won all his seven matches to finish with seven points to take top honours. Rudrakksh Parida of DAV, Chandrasekharpur bagged six points to finish runner-up. Jagadish Kumar Ghadei (5.5 points) of DAV Kalinga Nagar secured third position while Sumit Kumar (5) of DAV Pokhariput stood fourth with five points. Seventy four players from 15 schools participated in this tournament.
Orissa enter final
Both the men’s and women’s teams of Orissa entered the final of the VIIth National East Zone Softball Championships at Imphal, Saturday. In the men’s segment, Orissa thrashed Nagaland 10-0 while the women trounced Bihar by an identical margin. In both the finals, they will meet the hosts.
Surfer qualifies
D Sekhar Rao of Orissa qualified for the Windsurfing World Championships at Chennai in October 2016 by winning a bronze medal in the junior category of the recently-concluded International RS-1 Windsurfing Championship at Chennai.
Team leaves
Orissa shuttlers departed from the city, Saturday, to participate in the Junior National Badminton Championships at Jaipur, November 30-December 6. Swadhin Mishra and Kailash Pati are accompanying the players as coach and manager respectively. The Orissa shuttlers are expected to put up a good show.
Players selected
Khurda District Weightlifting Association selected lifters both for their men’s and the women’s teams Saturday, for the State Senior Weightlifting Championships at Berhampur, starting November 29.
