Angul: Orissa table tennis stars Ananya Basak, Swetapadma Dalai and M Eshwar Rao emerged champions in two singles’ categories each at the 23rd Inter-District & State Table Tennis Championships, which concluded here Saturday.
Khurda girl Ananya outplayed her districtmate Yoshita Jamula 4-0 (11-2, 11-7, 11-1, 11-6) in the junior girls’ final. She outshone Poushali Ghatak of AG Orissa 4-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6) in the women’s singles final.
Bhubaneswar girl Swetapadma defeated Soumyajyoti Das (Cuttack) in the cadet girls’ final and beat Bhubaneswar’s Nandini Biswal 4-1 (11-4, 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4) in the sub-junior girls’ final.
In the junior boys’ singles final, Cuttack boy Eshwar came from two sets down to edge past his districtmate Saheel Suman Bhuyan 4-2 (13-15, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9). He then outplayed Kishan Prusty of Bhubaneswar 4-0 (11-6, 15-13, 11-9, 11-5).
Orissa enter semis
Orissa sailed into the semifinals of the Sub-Junior Boys’ National Football Championships after handing Kerala a 3-0 thrashing in their final round league match at the JCT Sports Complex in Chohal (Punjab), Saturday. Ashanta Kerketa (14th, 87th minutes) and Purusottam Kerketta (18th) scored for Orissa.

Rising Student FC eves ran riot as the Orissa side thrashed J&K State Sports Council 8-0 in their campaign opener of the Indian Women’s League (IWL) qualifying round at Kolhapur in Maharashtra, Saturday.
Pyari Xaxa (12th, 16th and 35th minutes) scored a wonderful hat-trick while Jashmadi Samad (14th, 43rd) struck twice. Subhadra Sahu (first), Suprava Samal (19th) and Sinulata Sahoo (75th) scored apiece.
KISS script win
Two first half goals by Sonaram Soren (eighth) and Ramachandra Majhi (45th) helped KISS register a 2-0 win over Junior Mangala Club in a match of the Biju Patnaik Gold Cup football tournament in Bhubaneswar, Saturday.
Pramod bags bronze
Pramod Bhagat of Orissa had to be satisfied with the bronze medal finish in the singles event of the Para Badminton World Championships after losing his semifinal match to Ukan Rukandi of Indonesia 15-21, 20-22.
