Berhampur: In a tragic incident, an Indian Army aspirant drowned while his younger brother had a close shave while the siblings were practicing to swim in a pond near Lanjipalli area in Berhampur of Ganjam district Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Kuldeep Mohan Nayak (23), while the rescued one was identified Kuldeep’s younger brother Khetra Mohan Nayak, sons of Somanath Nayak.
According to reports, Kuldeep was a B.Tech student. But, the two brothers wanted to join the Indian Army. So, the two brothers were practicing swimming in a pond. As usual, they had gone to the pond to practice swimming Monday.
Unfortunately, they accidentally went into 20 feet deep water. Unable to come out, the two brothers shouted for help.
Hearing their screams, people taking bath in the pond jumped and managed to rescue Khetra after much effort while Kuldeep was pulled further into the deep water and went missing.
On being informed, the fire personnel led by Berhampur assistant fire officer, Sanatan Mahapatra, reached the spot and launched a search operation. After 40 minutes of search, Kuldeep was recovered from the deep water in an unconscious state.
Both of them were then rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur where the doctors declared Kuldeep brought dead. The condition of Khetra was normal after treatment.
The incident spread a pall of gloom in the area as both the brothers were bright students and wanted to join the Indian Navy and make the country proud.
Police seized the body and sent it for autopsy. A case of unnatural death was registered in this connection. After post-mortem, the body was then handed over to the family members after which the final rites were performed in the village.
Grief stricken family members were seen weeping in the burial ground. Locals sympathised with the bereaved family and demanded necessary compensation for them.
