Dasamantapur: A man of this block in Koraput district allegedly attempted suicide after repeated sterilisation operations involving himself and his wife failed to bear fruits resulting in birth of two more baby girls to their family.
Guru Muduli lives with his wife in Kiraamba village under Girligumma panchayat. The couple having two sons and two daughters ekes out a living by way of shift cultivation. They also occasionally work as daily labourers.
One day the two decided to go for family planning operation offered by the government as they were not in a position to take additional burden of children. Accordingly, they spoke to the village health worker and Guru’s wife Dwipa got herself operated at a sterilization camp in 2011. She got only Rs 600 for adopting the birth control method.
However, the villagers got shocked when she conceived again in 2013. There was also a marital discord between a husband and his wife in the village. Guru even attempted to kill the baby girl but the villagers managed to save her at that time.
Angry with the botched up operation, Guru himself went for vasectomy in Dasamantapur community health centre two years back. But to his utter despair, Dwipa became pregnant once again in 2016. She delivered her sixth baby at road side December 31, 2016 which sent shockwaves in the area.
“I am clueless as to how my wife conceived twice even as we both went for family planning operations,” Guru questioned. Thinking about the bleak future for his family of eight, Guru attempted to end his life recently but some villagers rescued him, said Asira Muduli, Bhagirathi Muduli and Sona Muduli of Kiraamba village.
While the villagers blamed the negligence of doctors who conducted the operation and demanded a probe , others, who also adopted similar methods of birth control, were in stress over their fate, it was learnt.
When contacted for this report, ADMO and CMC medical officer Arun Kumar Padhi said based on the complaint of the couple action would be taken against the doctor involved in these cases. He promised that government assistance will be made available for the hapless couple. PNN
