Guwahati: Two people have been declared dead while over 30 were reported missing after a country-made boat, carrying about 50 passengers capsized in Brahmaputra here Wednesday afternoon.
The accident took place near the Aswaklanta temple ghat in Guwahati after the boat collated with a concrete pillar.
The boat was carrying passengers to north Guwahati’s Madhyam Khanda from Guwahati city when the incident happened. The boat was also transporting some motorcycles.
Rescue operations are currently underway with the state and National Disaster Response Force teams leading the efforts. 10 persons have been rescued so far. However, due to inclement weather rescue teams are facing difficulty.
Mechanised boats like this carry thousands of passengers across the Brahmaputra. The river is in spate due to monsoon rains in the upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh.
