Bargaon: A botched tubectomy by a doctor at a camp organised by Bargaon Government Hospital in Sundargarh district has left a woman battling for life.
The administration has provided no aid for her treatment though the family has spent lakhs of rupees for the purpose. In a bid to suppress the botch-up, the doctor responsible for the operation, reportedly administered an injection and sent away the victim.
The matter came to the fore after the victim’s family members lodged a complaint with the chief district medical officer (CDMO) and the local police.
According to sources, a tubectomy camp was held at Bargaon Government Hospital last month. Sanatan Rohidas of Bargaon took his wife Jema Rohidas for the operation. After the surgery, Jema was sent back home only to experience chest and stomach pain.
Family members again admitted her to Bargaon Government Hospital from where she was shifted to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital as her pain kept increasing with each passing day.
With no improvement in her condition, she was then shifted to a Jharsuguda-based private hospital. The family members then approached the doctor who had conducted the tubectomy. The doctor administered an injection to the patient and referred the case to Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH).
The doctors in RGH asked her to be shifted to Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR). Doctors in VIMSAR conducted a surgery and found her intestine damaged during the tubectomy.
They referred her to Cuttack-based SCB Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. However, financial constraints forced Sanatan to bring Jema back to the village. Now, she is bed-ridden and battling for life.
Even after repeated transfer from one hospital to another for treatment, the family has not received any aid from the administration. Lack of funds has stood as an obstacle for Jema’s advanced treatment at SCB.
Locals, sympathetic to Jema’s family, demanded the administration to take notice of the woman’s plight and help her with funds for treatment. PNN
