Bhubaneswar, Sept 1: Sanskrit Week was celebrated on Mother’s Public School premises at Unit-1 here from August 24 to 30. Students and teachers took part in different competitions like shloka recitation, shloka antakshari, speech and essay writing competitions. Shloka chanting and inspiring thoughts were recited at the morning assembly. Principal Poly Patnaik along with Sanskrit teacher Harinarayan Panda, other staff members and students participated in the observation of the Sanskrit Week On the occasion, Panda said celebration of Sanskrit Week would provide a medium for popularising Sanskrit and stimulating interest in the language by increasing awareness about close
relationship between Sanskrit and other languages and the cultural heritage in India. “The Sanskrit Week in schools will encourage linguistic creativity among students and provide them an opportunity to benefit from the systematic structure
around Sanskrit,” he added. In 2014, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had directed all affiliated schools to celebrate ‘Sanskrit Week’ to promote the language among students and teachers. The schools had to hold short-speech competitions for stu
dents from different classes. Individual students may record a laghubashanam, a short speech of two minutes, on a topic of interest in Sanskrit. Mother’s Public School teacher Sawan Kumar Nayak said, “As per the CBSE rule, we organised different weeks for different Indian languages like Hindi divas and Oriya divas among others. We are planning to screen Sanskrit films the next time and collaborated with other schools to organise inter-school Sanskrit competitions.” Principal Poly Patnaik said the school has been organising Sanskrit Week since 2014. “Sanskrit is our language and I am all for it. When we can celebrate French Day, German Day and Spanish Day, then why not Sanskrit Day?” she added.
