Puri: Carpenters at Rath Yard here had to reject a wheel meant for Nandighosa Rath after cracks were found on its hub Wednesday.
The carpenters will construct a new wheel for Nandighosa after collecting quality wood.
“We have detected several cracks on the hub of a wheel meant for Nandighosa Rath while giving finishing touches to it. We have rejected the wheel and planned to construct a new one,” said Bijay Mahapatra, the chief carpenter of Nandighosa chariot.
Earlier, carpenters had detected cracks on a wheel of Darpadalan Rath. However, the the wheel was repaired quickly.
Sources, meanwhile, claimed that carpenters have expressed displeasure over poor quality wood supplied to them for chariot construction. “The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) used to collect wood from Nayagarh forest division for chariot construction. This year, the wood was collected from Boudh forest division in the wake of shortage of quality timber at Nayagarh. However, some of these are hollowed timbers,” said a source familiar with the development.
