Berhampur: An ASHA worker was reportedly beaten up by a doctor at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and was rendered critical after she pleaded with the latter to administer blood to a pregnant woman admitted by her for delivery at the hospital late Friday night.
The ASHA worker Lakshmi Behera lodged a complaint with Baidynathpur police and demanded the doctor’s arrest. The doctor reportedly not only beat up Behera but also misbehaved with her, she said in her complaint.
The incident triggered sharp resentment among ASHA workers under Narendrapur primary health centre as they met the superintendent of MKCG Hospital in his office and lodged a complaint.
Sources said Behera admitted a pregnant woman Geeta Nahak of Tanganapalli village at MKCG Medical College and Hospital at 2 am Friday after she experienced serious labour pain. The woman was immediately taken to the operation theatre where the doctor noticed her bleeding. and asked Behera to bring a packet of blood. Behera immediately arranged blood and urged the doctor to administer it to Nahak. However, the doctor reportedly misbehaved with Behera and assaulted her.
When contacted, Baidynathpur IIC Ajay Mishra said a probe is on and the doctor will be arrested if the charges are found to be true.
Sources said doctors at MKCG Medical College and Hospital misbehaving with relatives and ASHA workers of serious patients admitted to the hospital in late night is nothing new. PNN
