Ganjam: In a shocking incident, a newborn girl was left fighting for life after an on-duty doctor accidentally cut open her stomach while trying to cut the umbilical cord, resulting in the infant’s intestines spilling out.
The incident occurred at Ganjam health centre Monday.
According to sources, Puja Sahu, wife of Karthik Sahu of Prayagi village under Ganjam block, was admitted to the health centre for delivery Saturday. She later gave birth to a baby girl under the supervision of gynaecologist Susant Kumar Behera.
The doctor while cutting the umbilical cord of the baby, carelessly cut open her stomach. In no time, the baby’s intestines spilled out to the shock of the doctor and the nurses on duty.
However, the doctor in a bid to save face claimed that the baby was suffering from a disease which was why the intestines spilled out. The mother’s family however refused to buy the doctor’s version and claimed that the same doctor had conducted an ultrasound test on Puja at his private clinic in Komapalli, and demanded to know why the doctor did not reveal to them at that time if the baby had any ailment. The woman’s family also accused the doctor of seeking a bribe to conduct the delivery.
Meanwhile, the baby was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in a critical condition. Sources said the family was now planning to shift the baby to a Vizag hospital for better treatment. The incident spread shockwaves in the area with locals demanding a probe into the matter and action against the erring doctor. PNN
