Cuttack: A senior doctor at SCB Medical College and Hospital here allegedly lost his cool and booted a patient suffering from kidney disease Thursday for turning up at the hospital before the scheduled date.
The shocking incident took place at the nephrology department of the premier hospital. The patient, Laxman Deep (50) of Sohela in Bargarh district, has lodged a complaint in this regard with the SCBMCH superintendent.
According to Laxman, he came to SCB Thursday morning for his follow-up treatment. As he could not meet the doctor who treated him earlier, Laxman met another doctor of the nephrology department who prescribed him some medicines.
When he went to the Niramaya courter to collect the free medicines and showed the prescription at the counter, the employees at the medicine store refused to give him the medicines on the basis of the prescription. Laxman again went to the hospital and fortunately found the doctor treating his condition.
However, the doctor got irate at Laxman and berated him saying why he had come to the hospital much before the scheduled date of his treatment and got the prescription written by another doctor.
The angry doctor allegedly lifted a chair to hit the patient, as he pleaded with him, falling on his feet and begging apologies for his mistake. However, it did little to cool the doctor’s temper and the latter hit the patient with his boots and allegedly even walked on him. Subsequently, the said doctor snatched the prescription and other documents from the patients, tore them and threw the paper pieces at the patient’s face.
The patient, sobbing uncontrollably, loitered on the hospital premises for several hours showing the bruises on his body to people. Later, some people asked him to lodge a complaint with the hospital superintendent.
After hearing the patient’s plight, SCBMCH superintendent Shyama Kanungo asked him to submit a written complaint. “I received a complaint. The matter will now be probed into and a show-cause notice will be issued to the concerned doctor,” Kanungo said.
Kanungo called the accused doctor to her chamber and asked him about the details. The doctor, however, rubbished the allegations and said the entire episode was ‘false and fabricated.’
