Berhampur: Vigilance sleuths Friday arrested an assistant pediatric surgeon Dr Arun Kumar Dash on the charge of taking a bribe of `10,000 for conducting operation on a newborn in MKCG Medical College and Hospital here in Ganjam district.
According to Vigilance sources, Suraj Chauhan of Nabarangpur had admitted his newborn child for a minor operation a few days ago.
After admitting the baby in MKCG, Suraj approached the doctor for the operation. However, he demanded `10,000 to conduct the operation. As Suraj expressed his inability to pay the bribe, the doctor reportedly refused to conduct the operation.
Left with no option, Suraj then approached the local Vigilance office and narrated his ordeal. Accordingly a trap was laid and Suraj took chemical-laced currency notes of `10,000 and handed it over to Arun in his chamber. Meanwhile, the Vigilance sleuths conducted a raid and caught the doctor red-handed. Later, the Vigilance officials arrested him.
Simultaneous raids were conducted at his house in Chhatrapur and another house in Berhampur-based Bijipur. Many important documents were seized during the raids, it was learnt.
A case was registered and further investigation was on, Vigilance sources said. PNN
