Bhubaneswar: Dutee Chand of Orissa clinched gold medal in the women’s 100m dash at the third leg of the Indian Grand Prix Athletics Meet here Monday, but missed the World Championships qualification mark by a whisker. She clocked 11.30 seconds while the World Championship entry standard in this event stands at 11.26 seconds.
Kerala quartermiler Muhammed Anas smashed the national record in men’s 400m race en route to winning a gold medal . The 22-year-old Anas clocked 45.32 seconds under hot and humid conditions at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. He also qualified for the World Championships to be held in London in August. The entry standard for the World Championships stands at 45.50seconds.Rajiv Arokia and Sachin Baby were second and third in 46.32 seconds and 47.18 seconds respectively.
Orissa sailors grab 8 medals
Orissa sailors performed splendidly to win eight medals including six gold in the Navy Open Sailing Championship in Goa, May 13-16.
Sekhar Rao won four gold medals, while Manaswini Moharana won two gold and two silver medals. Both Manaswini and Sekhar won medals in race board category.
“Many of the events are postponed Monday because of heavy rain. Orissa sailors have a bright chance to win many more medals Tuesday,” stated coach Sabir Bux.
Officials eligible
Santosh Kumar Mallik and Rajanikant Sahu of Orissa became eligible as national level officials after the completion of the national level officiating course in Guwahati, May 12-14. After the completion of this course both Santosh and Rajnikant became eligible to conduct any national level tournaments. They will go for white batch referees course in 2018 after which they will be eligible to conduct ITF tournaments.
Cuttack clinch title
Cuttack emerged champions of the Oorja CAPF’s U-19 football tournament after beating Sundargarh 2-0 in the final at the KIIT Stadium here Monday. Sasmita Behera scored the first goal in the 24th minute, while Dipa Nayak found the back of the net in the 54th minute.
