Ensure quality of packaged food: Jena

Bhubaneswar: Health Minister Pratap Jena has asked food inspectors to ensure the quality of edible oils, ghee, drinking water and other packaged products regularly and to crack down on units manufacturing fakes.
The direction from the minister came during a review meeting Tuesday here at the secretariat. He warned officials of stringent action if they fail to comply with the government order and do not ensure the quality of food products.
The instruction of the minister appears to have come after the busting of fake ghee manufacturing units in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar a few months ago.
In December Mangalabag police had raided an adulterated ghee manufacturing unit in the Professorpara area here and arrested its owner.
The police informed that the accused had confessed that the ghee was prepared by using 90 per cent palm oil and chemicals.
During the review the minister also asked officials of the department to disseminate information about government’s health facilities to patients in hospitals and medical colleges though large LED screens.
He also asked health officials to ensure proper implementation of Niramaya — a free drug distribution scheme of the government in all districts properly.
