Dunguripali, Dec 19: In a tragic mishap, five members of a family were killed when a truck rammed into their house at Cherupali village square here in Subarnapur district late Thursday night.
Police Friday said the deceased have been identified as Nabin Kumar Bag (45), his wife Binodini (38), sister Brundabati (48) and two children, 18-year-old son Prashant and 14-year-old daughter Jayanti.
The incident occurred when the truck was on its way from Bargarh to Bolangir late Thursday night. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which then rammed into the house of Bag killing all the five members of the family who were asleep at that time.
Local police station inspector in-charge IIC Surubabu Chhatria and other police officials reached the spot and recovered the bodies from the debris with the help of the villagers.
The villagers placed the bodies on the middle of the road seeking compensation to the next kin of the deceased.
On being informed, sub-collector Suryanarayan Das and sub divisional police officer Bhabani Shankar Udgata arrived at the spot. After a marathon meeting with the villagers, the administration declared that it would provide Rs 80,000 to the kin of the deceased. Following the announcement of compensation, the protesters called off their strike.
After the road blocked was lifted, police sent the bodies for post-mortem, which was done at a government hospital.
The driver and the helper of the vehicle, however, fled the scene.
