Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: Heaps of garbage piling up on the roads are proof of the deplorable state of sanitation in the twin cities. Stinking garbage strewn around colonies in both the cities has made the lives of denizens miserable. Neither are drains being cleaned nor the garbage heaps lifted.
Both the BMC (Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation) and CMC (Cuttack Municipal Corporation are throwing their hands up and remaining mute spectators to the steadily worsening situation. Many colonies have no dustbin to throw in the garbage. People dump the household waste alongside the roads. This makes a stink out of the city, spoiling the environment.
This is the main reason why there is the frequent outbreak of diseases. Also, many dustbins are over-flowing as the BMC does not have a system to pick up the garbage from them on a regular basis.
“We had a dustbin in our colony. It was broken due to some reason. When we alerted the municipality, they took away the dustbin. No new dustbin has been placed,” a resident of Chandrasekharpur area said.
The BMC and the municipality never take stock of the cleanliness and beautification of the city. Except for the Highways and NHs, the roads in the colonies and streets are mostly dumping yards for garbage. This affects beautification of the cities.
Similar is the condition of Cuttack district. Those entering the city are greeted first by heaps of garbage.
An environmentalist said, “Awareness on sanitation should be created among the public. The CMC should, alongside, pay attention to beautification of the city.”
