Cuttack: A girl, who had been running from pillar to post for justice after allegedly being raped by the youth she loved, Monday lodged a complaint with Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sanjeev Arora.
The victim, who hails from Telengapentha area in Sadar police limits, alleged that instead of putting her rapist behind bars, the police were shielding him.
According to her complaint, she got into a relationship with the accused, a resident of Nuagarh, a few years back. The accused promised to marry her and went physical with her on several occasions. When she forced him to marry her, the accused took her to a notary and registered their marriage last year.
However, when the girl told him to take her home, the accused avoided a direct answer. When she started forcing him on this issue, the accused started harassing her and even threatened to kill her, the complainant alleged.
Having no alternative, the victim held a dharna in front of the house of the accused but to no avail. She then approached the Sadar police February 28. However, the police did not pay heed to her ordeal. Instead, they made her sit at the police station the whole night. The next day the police summoned the parents of the victim and subsequently lodged a complaint under Sections 417, 506, 294 and 493, conveniently dropping Section 376 (rape) from her complaint, the victim alleged.
Subsequently, the judicial magistrate first class (rural) recorded statements of the victim under Section 164 and directed the police to add Section 376 in the case. Although 20 days have passed since the rape case was registered, the police are sitting silent, the complainant alleged.
The victim said the police repeatedly misbehaved with her whenever she approached them to inquire about the progress in her case. The hapless girl then approached the DCP and submitted a copy of the notorised document as proof of marriage. She threatened to commit suicide if she did not get justice. DCP Sanjeev Arora said, “A probe is on. I have directed the Sadar police to arrest the accused at the earliest.”
