Cuttack: A PIL has been filed in the Orissa High Court alleging irregularities in the tender for disposal of garbage in the Silver City here.
Congress corporator Giribala Behera has filed the PIL and claimed that the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has shown undue favour to a private firm by engaging it to collect garbage in the city.
The petitioner said the CMC had invited tenders from private parties for disposal of garbage October 1 last year. It had picked Metro Waste Handling Private Limited to manage the garbage in November 2017.
Claiming that the tender process was not conducted in a free and fair manner, Behera said that the CMC has hired the private agency at a higher cost. She alleged that the CMC has promised to pay `6,309 for disposal of a tonne garbage to the private agency while the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) is paying only `2,950 per tonne garbage. The Congress corporator has made Urban Development secretary, CMC commissioner and the private agency as parties to the case. The petitioner urged the HC to cancel the tender. She pleaded for division of the Silver City into several zones for proper disposal of garbage. “The CMC should not engage a private agency to manage garbage for the whole city. It should take steps to divide the city into several zones and engage separate firms for proper disposal of garbage,” Behera said in her petition.
