Bhubaneswar, May 22: After a brief respite, heatwave returned to the state especially in western Orissa with mercury soaring to 45.5°Celsius at Titilagarh.
People in coastal districts have experienced uneasiness due to sultry weather condition. Mercury soared to 40°C Celsius at nine places of the state, Sunday.
According to a Met bulletin, Titilagarh recorded the state’s highest day temperature in the day followed by 45°C at Bolangir.
Other towns which experienced heatwave are: Jharsuguda at 43.4°C, Sambalpur (41.2°C), Sundargarh (40°C), Hirakud (42.4°C), Bhawanipatna (44.5°C), Malkangiri (44.4°C) and Sonepur (41.9°C), said the bulletin.
The temperature, however, remained below 40°C in other towns. The day temperature of the Capital city stood at 36°C with a humidity level of 78 per cent while Cuttack remained at 36.6°C.
The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre director Sarat Chandra Sahu indicated that the temperature may remain the same for the next seven days and rain may occur at some places in the afternoons followed by thunderstorms.
“The day temperature in western Orissa would remain same like today while temperature may rise further in south and coastal parts,” he said.
Sources in the special relief commissioner’s office said the confirmed death toll due to sunstroke in the state remained at 20 while the alleged figure crosses 180.
