Cuttack: The state government has evolved a plan to develop a heritage circuit in the city by connecting Netaji’s Birthplace Museum, Barabati fort, Goddess Chandi temple and Maritime Museum in the Silver City.
According to sources, the state government will connect the four heritage sites through roads in the city. “The Netaji Subhas Interpretation Centre, built near the Netaji Birthplace Museum, will be the core point of the proposed heritage circuit,” said an official of the tourism department.
According to sources, the tourism and culture department will construct a musical fountain and a light and sound show on Netaji’s life at the interpretation centre. Besides, steps will be taken to build seating arrangements and food courts for visitors at the venue.
“The state government has decided to renovate a pond in the locality and start a boating facility in it. Besides, road maps to all heritage sites in the city will be prepared at the interpretation centre,” said the official.
The sources said, a decision regarding the heritage circuit was taken at a high-level meeting under the chairmanship of Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan in Bhubaneswar Tuesday. The state government has constituted a committee comprising Cuttack Municipal commissioner, Cuttack additional collector, tourism director and culture department deputy director to prepare a blueprint for the mega project. The committee will report to the director of culture department, sources added.
Notably, the tourism department had built Subhas Bose Interpretation Centre in the city to narrate the life history of Netaji to tourists. The state government had spent Rs 2.38 crore on the project. The interpretation centre has a large auditorium for organising public meetings and cultural events.
The culture department has handed over the interpretation centre to a trust that manages the Netaji Birthplace Museum last year. However, the centre is yet to be opened for the public for reasons best known to the authorities.
