Puri: There are score of people who find it difficult to meet their basic needs like clothes. Considering the plight of such people, some social activists in the Holy City here have launched an initiative to arrange clothes for the destitute.
These social activists urge people to donate their old and unnecessary clothes, including winter garments, to homeless and poor people. They have coined a few slogans like Darkar nahi jadi dia, nahele nia (give us your unnecessary clothes or take them from us) and Thile dia, nathile nia (if you have surplus clothes give them to us or if you have no clothes then take from us) to draw residents’ attention to their initiative.
A group of social activists led by Subhas Chandra Sahu, Bishnupriya Mangaraj and Rupalin Mangaraj of Darji Square area have been collecting old clothes from households for last couple of days. They distribute clothes so collected among the slum dwellers and beggars.
“The civic authorities of Jeypur city in Koraput district had launched a programme to collect old clothes from people and distribute them among the homeless. We came to know about the initiative and decided to do the same here in the Pilgrim City,” said Sahu.
According to Sahu, many households, institutions and social outfits have extended their support to this humanitarian mission. “We usually collect clothes from people and stack them at a particular place near Darji Square. Poor people and beggars then take away clothes according to their needs,” Sahu added.
