Jajpur Road: Tension flared at Jajpur Road community health centre (CHC) after a six-year-old boy was reportedly administered a rabies vaccine instead of a tetanus shot by a nurse due to alleged carelessness here Thursday.
Irate family members and relatives of the boy held protests at the CHC, demanding the immediate suspension of the concerned nurse and action against medical staffers for risking the life of the boy.
On learning of the incident, the community health centre officer reached the spot and pacified the agitators. The agitation was called off after the officer assured them that he would look into the matter and take necessary action.
According to sources, Susant Nayak of Tentulikhunta village under Korei police limits admitted his son Ruturaj Nayak to the CHC after he suffered an injury while playing outside the house.
Suspecting the boy to be bitten by a dog, a nurse who was on duty administered a rabies injection to the boy. This led to a fight between Susant’s family members and medical staff. The nurse claimed she was unaware that the boy had suffered an injury and blamed the family members for not properly communicating to her what had happened to the boy.
However, Susant accused the nurse of carelessness and risking the life of his son. Meanwhile, CHC officer Prasanjeet Kar clarified the boy was was admitted to the hospital with a minor injury.
“The doctors had prescribed him a tetanus injection. However, the nurse due to her carelessness administered him a rabies shot,” Kar said.
The boy is safe and there is no problem, Kar added. Meanwhile, locals expressed concern stating that such carelessness on part of medical staff would put the lives of patients at risk. PNN
