Bhubaneswar: Orissa scripted a resolute fightback coming back from two goals down to force a draw against Punjab in an exciting match of the Sub-Junior National football championships at the JCT Sports Complex in Phagwara. Both the goals for Orissa were scored by Jadunath Hansdah.
Punjab started aggressively and took the lead when Prince Singh scored in the second minute. He then struck again in the 40th minute to double the lead for the hosts.
However after the change of ends, Orissa players came back strongly. Jadunath struck back-to-back goals in the 85th and 89th minutes to salvage a draw for his side.
Orissa will play their next match Sunday against Assam.
Bhubaneswar in final
Bhubaneswar entered the final of the 58th Senior Men’s Inter-District football championships after scraping past Cuttack 4-3 in the first semifinal at Bolangir, Friday.
The match ended goalless in regulation time. In the ensuing penalty shootout Bhubaneswar converted four of their five shots, while Cuttack could find the back of the net only thrice.
Massive victory
Dilip Tirkey XI (DTXI) registered a massive 8-0 victory against Mahaveer Club in a match of the Kailash Chandra Memorial U-17 football tournament at the Reserve Police Ground in Cuttack, Friday.
Such was the dominance of DTXI players that, Mahaveer players were reduced to the role of mere spectators. Praveen Chetry (third), Sukra Tirkey (ninth), Arbind Gurang (13th, 15th), Sidharth Thapa (21st), Parag Pradhan (24th), Ajay Barua (25th) and Akash (40th) scored for the winning team.
In another match, Chand Club defeated Young Utkal Club 2-0. SK Raj and SK Farid were the goal scorers for Chand Club.
