Bhubaneswar: Jauna Murmu of Orissa put the disappointments of failure at the Asian Athletics Championships behind her as she bagged a silver medal in the 57th National Inter-State Senior Athletic Championship at the Acharya Nagarjuna University ground in, Guntur, Saturday.
Jauna clocked 58.68 seconds to clinch silver in the 400m hurdles on the first day. Anu Raghavam from Kerala bagged the gold medal with a timing of 57. 21 seconds. In the process Anu set a new meet record. Sarita Gaikwad of Gujarat finished third to win the bronze medal after clocking 1:00.27 seconds.
Meanwhile in the 200 metres heats both Amiya Mallick and Srabani Nanda qualified for the finals which come off Sunday. Manoj Kumar Moharana also qualified for the shot put final. Dutee Chand and Purnima Hembram are other Oriya athlete participating in the meet. Their events also take place Sunday.
Meanwhile Asian champion Govindan Lakshmanan grabbed a gold medal in men’s 5000m race. Lakshmanan, representing Tamil Nadu, won the event clocking 14:07.76 seconds. Uttarakhand’s Man Singh (14:20.50s) and Kalidas Hirave (14:24.91) of Maharashtra were in second and third positions respectively.
The other meet records were created by, Loganathan Suriya (women’s 5000m) and Sarita Singh (women’s hammer throw).
Tamil Nadu’s Suriya (15:46.92) finished ahead of Asian Athletics Championships bronze medallist Sanjivani Babur Jadhav (16:35.64s), representing AFI, and Preenu Yadav (16:56.60s) of Delhi.
Mixed show
Seven Orissa karatekas had a mixed show in the ongoing Asian Karate Championships in Kazakhstan, Saturday. Fighting in the 67kg category, Dilip Kumar Jena won his first round match against Pakistan’s Rehemtulla 1-0, but lost his second round match against Namfuengift Sutha of Thailand 3-5
In the women’s kata, Valena Valentina lost to her Japanese counterpart Iwamota 0-5. However she came back well and won her next round matches against Sri Lanka and Malaysia 5-0 and 4-1 respectively. Payal Baral lost her first round match to Jordan. Similarly Loma Swain also suffered consecutive defeats from Iran and Kazakhstan.
