Jajpur: A jewellery shop owner showed exceptional courage, fought with an armed gang and foiled their robbery bid on his shop at Duburi area of Kalinganagar here Monday night.
The gang shot at him and escaped, leaving the owner critically injured. Passers-by rushed him to the Tata Memorial Hospital. The injured was Hati Moharana, owner of Rana Jewellery.
The incident took place around 10.30pm last night while Hati was about to close his shop. Bike-borne robbers approached the shop and resorted to two rounds of blank firing to terrorise him. They tried to snatch away a jewellery bag Hati was carrying.
The owner strongly resisted the attempt. The bag also carried the day’s collection in lakhs. “The gang held him at gun-point and asked him to hand over the bag. They punched him on his face and head. Still, he resisted. One of them stabbed him with a sharp-edged weapon and then they opened fire at him, and escaped from the scene,” police noted.
A bullet struck Hati and he fell down. Hearing the noise, passersby rushed to the spot.
Kalinganagar police swung into action and started an investigation. The gang was suspected to be hiding in Sukinda area. All major check-points were sealed and a search operation was on.
