Bhubaneswar: The state government Monday decided to complete the ongoing work undertaken at Kalinga stadium to host the 3rd Asian Athletic Championship by May-end.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting at the Secretariat here in the presence of Sports and Youth Services Minister Sudam Marndi and Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi. The four-day event will begin July 6, 2017.
Reviewing the progress made so far, Padhi directed the sports department officials to ensure high quality reception, accommodation, healthcare and security arrangements for the international athletes.
“The State will host the championship meet to be attended by over 45 nations along with world champions. About 1100 guests including athletes, team officials and fans will arrive in Orissa for about seven days. We have made the detailed action plan for their travel, stay, practice, security and health-care,” Padhi told reporters.
The event would be branded to showcase the culture, art, sports, tourism and industrial potential of Orissa, he said.
Sports secretary Vishal Dev said 13 committees would be constituted under the chairmanship of senior officers of state government to manage and monitor various activities for successful conduct of the mega event. Around 20 world champion teams are also expected to participate in the event. Target has been set for completion of preparatory works at Kalinga Stadium in the city by end of May 2017, Dev added.
Relaying of synthetic track at the main stadium, construction of synthetic warm-up track, construction of elevators and associated electrical works have been fast-tracked.
Construction of the indoor warm-up synthetic track, field development of inner circle of main stadium, outlaying areas would be completed as per the schedule, sources said.
