Khurda: The cease work agitation launched by Khurda District Bar Association seeking relocation of the district judge’s court from Bhubaneswar to Khurda entered the fifth day Friday.
Lawyers affiliated to the bar association had launched their agitation August 13 by locking the civil and criminal courts in the town here.
Meanwhile, police broke open the lock and escorted the judges into the court in a bid to resume work. Opposing the police action, members of the bar association staged a sit-in in front of the civil and criminal court.
Political parties like ruling Biju Janata Dal and opposition Congress and BJP have extended their support to the district bar association agitation.
According to the agitating lawyers, the district judge court, vigilance court, Pocso court and the district registration office have been functioning from Bhubaneswar, which has been recognised as a sub-division of Khurda.
“The state government had declared Khurda as a district 25 years ago. However, many important offices, including the district judge’s court, have been functioning from Bhubaneswar. We are demanding the immediate relocation of all these offices to Khurda, which is the district headquarters town,” said a lawyer.
District superintendent of police Dipti Ranjan Ray said they have held several rounds of discussions with the lawyers to end their agitation but failed. “The civil and criminal court here was paralysed for four days due to the cease work agitation by the district bar association. We took steps to open the court Friday as per the order of the district judge,” Ray added.
