Bhubaneswar: The Orissa High Court Bar Association Wednesday resorted to two-day cease work agitation and State Bar Council has called for a state-wide cease work Thursday in protest against the alleged assault on an advocate by the cops in Cuttack Tuesday.
Hundreds of lawyers Tuesday night gheraoed the Chauliaganj police station in Cuttack demanding action against the police personnel involved in the attack on the advocate and staged a demonstration at the RDC office in Cuttack Wednesday.
Tension prevailed in Cuttack after the mob set afire a PCR van near the RDC office after a tussle between the police and the agitating lawyers who also resorted to road blockade in the city by burning tyres.
High Court Bar Association Secretary Satyabrata Mohanty and State Bar Council Chairman Tahali Chandra Mohanty have strongly condemned the attack on the lawyer by the police personnel and demanded immediate arrest and suspension of the police personnel involved in the incident.
Mohanty said the lawyers will boycott the courts across the state Thursday in protest against the attack on the advocate.
The High Court Bar Association will meet Thursday to decide the future course of action.
Police Commissioner of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack Satyajit Mohanty described the incident as most unfortunate and said an Additional DGP rank officer will investigate the matter and submit a report.
He appealed to the lawyers to maintain peace and said action will be initiated against the erring police personnel on the basis of the report.
