Bhubaneswar, Sept 1: Panic gripped the residents in Khandagiri here after an elephant was spotted in the area Thursday.
Locals said the elephant entered the city’s Bharatpur area from nearby forests and ventured into Udaygiri Hills.
“The elephant had broken a wall in Udaygiri and was seen moving on the road which led to trepidation among the residents,” they added.
Forest department officials rushed to the spot to capture the animal and till Thursday evening were trying to take the animal to a safe place.
Forest officials said the elephant was pushed to Khandagiri area by the evening and they were trying to send the animal back to the nearby forests. Several commuters were seen standing on Khandagiri over bridge to have a glimpse of the elephant, and this slowed down the traffic on both the roads. However, Khandagiri police said the elephant will move back to the forest soon. Earlier in the day, two persons were killed in jumbo attacks at two different places in the state.
