Bhubaneswar: A ‘beating heart surgery’ , a first in the state, involving a cardiac surgery on a live beating heart without an aid of an external mechanical alternative was done Thursday by a team of doctors at the city-based Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).
A 13-year-old female child, who suffered from a cardiac valve disorder, was operated through this technique where her faulty valve (Mitral Valve) was replaced through the surgery. The surgery was undertaken in KIMS with support from the Pradyumna Bal Memorial Hospital.
The hospital, in a release, claimed in a first in Orissa a mitral valve replacement was done through beating heart surgery.
“This is for the first time in Orissa that a Redo Mitral Valve replacement was done. A team of doctors operated upon the child who was suffering from a cardiac disorder through the beating heart surgery and fast track anesthesia. This is the maiden such surgery in the state,” a release from the hospital claimed.
According to doctors, the child on whom the surgery was done was put on a fast-track anesthesia protocol by which she was extubated on the operation table itself without requiring post-operative mechanical ventilation.
A team comprising surgeons Dr Bana Bihari Mishra, Dr Nimai Charan Behera, cardiac anesthetists Dr Ashok Kumar Badamali, Dr Jyoti Ranjan Parida and perfusionist Saumyakant Satpathy and Subishna Bal undertook the surgery.
