Bhubaneswar: An elderly man died after he was swept away and thrown into an open drain by rainwater flowing on the road near Banadurga Temple in Unit VI area Monday evening.
He was identified as Harihar Patnaik, a tuition teacher and resident of Unit-VI.
According to reports, when a heavy downpour lashed the city at 6 pm, Harihar and his wife were standing near a place in Unit VI area.
Suddenly, a heavy gush of water rushed towards them and the current was so strong that it swept away Harihar. Though his wife attempted to save him, she wasn’t successful and the flow of water dumped pulled him towards the open drain. He had been swept away in the drain filled with rainwater.
The fire services personnel rescued him from Ganga Nagar Square, around 400 metres from the spot.
He was rushed to the Capital Hospital, but the doctors declared him brought dead.
Some years ago, a girl fell into an open drain and died after being swept away in the drain water at Nayapalli area.
