Rourkela: A man reportedly breathed his last at Rourkela government hospital due to alleged medical negligence here in Sundargarh district Friday. The deceased was identified as Asish Hansda of Dharuadihi village.
His family members admitted Asish to Sundargarh district headquarters hospital after he was taken ill. Doctors then referred him to Rourkela government hospital after his condition worsened December 25, 2017.
However, he was left unattended to in RGH. No doctors and nurses attended to him during his four-day long treatment, family members said. After the intervention of an NGO, Asish was given oxygen for 15 minutes only to be removed after the NGO officials returned.
Even as his family members pleaded with doctors to attend to Asish, no one paid heed to their pleas. Later, Asish breathed his last Friday morning, family members claimed. The death spread tension among his relatives who arrived at the hospital and staged a demonstration.
When contacted, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Ramchandra Behera refuted the allegations, saying there was no negligence on the part of the medical authorities. “Asish was referred to VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR). However, his family members failed to shift him due to financial constraints,” he added.
Meanwhile, the family claimed that the doctors in the government hospital were paid commission by private clinics and nursing homes to refer patients to them. The doctors force patients to leave the hospital and get admissions at private nursing homes, Asish’s family members alleged. PNN
