Bhubaneswar: The crime branch (CB) sleuths Monday arrested a person in connection with uploading of photos of Rama Devi Woman University students on social media site Facebook with derogatory captions. The accused identified as Sujit Sahoo, was arrested from Mahanga in Cuttack district. CB officials said Sahoo had created a page, Aarohi Creations, which posted the photographs of around 100 students with the caption “sex contest”. Sahoo had recently conducted a profile picture contest in Rama Devi college and organised an online beauty contest. The page has been blocked by the Facebook after complaints.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who had ordered the CB to investigate the case tweeted Tuesday morning about the arrest. “Prime accused Sujit Sahu in the cyber crime case arrested last night. Hope this serves as a strong deterrent & such acts are not repeated”. Crime branch officials produced Sahoo at SDJM court here. The sleuths prayed for three-day remand of Sahoo which the court granted.
“We will interrogate the accused from Wednesday and try to find out if there is involvement of any other person in the crime,” said BK Sharma, special DG (CB). Earlier, a case was registered with Sahid Nagar police station in this regard but the commissionerate police failed to apprehend the accused. Consequently, the students urged Chief Minister for immediate action.
