Barang: There is a piece of good news for animal lovers and regular visitors to the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here.
Female chimpanzee, Pampeta, is going to deliver for fifth time within a few days, NZP sources said. Pampeta had conceived February 2. “The female chimpanzee is expected to deliver October 2 after 240 days of pregnancy. Our veterinarians are observing her health condition regularly. Now, we have only five chimpanzees, including Pampeta,” said a zoo official.
NZP sources said Pampeta has been kept at a separate enclosure along with male chimpanzee Julu.
NZP authorities had brought Julu and Pampeta from a zoo in Singapore by sending four crocodiles and two bear through an animal exchange programme May 16, 1994.
The female chimpanzee had delivered for the first time after five years’ of their stay in NZP. However, the first baby died within a few days of its birth. Pampeta’s second child Purnima has grown up to a mature chimp and had delivered for the first time in 2009.
“We could not save Pampeta’s third child while the fourth one has been sent to another zoo through the animal exchange programme,” added the official.
