Bhubaneswar: Despite strict regulations from the commissionerate police against extortion from heavy vehicles, some cops have found a new way out to fleece the vehicle drivers coming from the neighbouring states.
Such allegations came against some traffic personnel who forcibly collected a fine of Rs 300 from 10 heavy vehicles of Andhra Pradesh near Khandagiri Chowk here Saturday morning and denied them proper receipt.
According to sources, the traffic cops deployed at the chowk intercepted the heavy vehicle drivers and ordered them to step down. When the drivers stepped down, they faced the wrath of the traffic police and the local police officials.
The cops asked them to pay a fine of Rs 500, alleging that the trucks were going on the middle of the road as a result of which there was a traffic jam. But, when the drivers denied it, the cops allegedly took away their vehicle licence.
With no option left, the truck drivers agreed to pay the fine in return of proper receipt, so that they could submit it to the vehicle owners. But the traffic police refused to give a receipt in case they pay Rs 300, said a source.
However, the drivers paid the fine amount and were released. Meanwhile, they also disclosed the incident to the local people who informed the media persons.
On being asked, SP (Traffic) Jatin Panda said, “I reached the spot and investigated the matter. As the drivers were talking in Telugu language there was confusion between the drivers and the policemen. Later, the drivers were given proper receipt.”
