Keonjhar: Resentment brewed among locals after a newborn’s body was found dumped in a garbage near the Chief District Medical Officer’s (CDMO’s) government quarters here in Keonjhar district Monday.
The matter came to the fore after locals spotted the body and alerted police. A senior officer said the police received a call regarding the newborn’s body in the trash.
Preliminary investigation revealed miscreants may have dumped the body after the baby died while undergoing treatment in the hospital. The incident spread tension in the area for a while as locals thronged the spot and expressed displeasure over repeated incidents. Fearing law and order situation, the body was immediately recovered.
“Lack of awareness and financial problems are the prime reasons for such incidents. After death in hospitals, people take the newborn and dump it in garbages and dustbins. It is the duty of the medical authorities to spread awareness and take action against those responsible for such acts,” said Kunal Sethy, a social worker.
Moreover, people fail to carry out the funeral rites of the child due to financial constraints and prefer to dump the body. Such incidents mostly involve unwed parents, locals alleged. They demanded strict rules to bring an end to such acts and action against those responsible for the heinous crime. PNN
