Bhubaneswar, July 31: The rising onion prices are bound to make consumers shed tears this monsoon too. The price of this kitchen staple has witnessed a hefty increase within a span of just a fortnight. Price of onion has gone up by `5 to `7 per kg in various markets of the state.
Only two months back, onion farmers in the state were forced to sell their harvest at a meager price of `5 to `7 per kg. Now, the vegetable is selling at `20 per kg or even higher in many parts of the state.
According to officials of the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare (FS&CW) department, the state government doesn’t have proper facility to store onions and, hence, they did not buy the vegetable.
“As the price of onion in source market Nasik has increased, it naturally reflects in our markets. We have asked district-level officials to keep a strict vigil on the markets and curb hoardings,” said FS&CW minister Surya Narayan Patro.
