Bhubaneswar: Orissa boys and girls teams defeated their respected opponents in their matches of the National Level U-14 Schools’ Boys’ & Girls’ Rugby Championships at the Unit-VI High School Ground here, Monday.
The state colts routed Telangana 30-0 before defeating Jharkhand 5-0. Among other winners in the boys’ category were Andhra Pradesh who defeated Uttar Pradesh 5-0 before losing to Assam 0-15 later in the day. New Delhi thrashed Punjab 10-0 and Telangana 5-0 respectively. Jharkhand registered a 5-0 win over Punjab while UP and Gujarat played out a stalemate.
In the girls’ category, the hosts handed Punjab a 35-0 drubbing before playing out a stalemate with Gujarat. Besides the hosts, only Jharkhand managed to win as they also defeated Punjab, 5-0. The other games between New Delhi and Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Jharkhand and Gujarat failed to produce decisive results.
Notably, nine boys’ teams comprising 103 players and seven girls’ teams comprising 84 students, from different states are participating in the meet.
The State Inter-District Wrestling Championships will take place at the Utkal Karate School (UKS) here January 20-21. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Orissa State Wrestling Association, Sunday. It was also decided that various steps will be taken in future for the improvement of the sports in the state.
