Berhampur: A video of a peon of Berhampur University tied to a pole has recently gone viral here, putting the security system of the university in question and leaving the employees in panic.
Last Friday some hostel inmates held a peon in captive by tying him to a pole over some reason. The video of this incident is doing rounds from in social media.
The non teaching staff of the university Monday met registrar Ranjan Biswal and vice chancellor Rajendra Prasad Das and handed them over a letter citing the failure of security facilities.
Sources said, inmates of boys’ hostel-2 and Banshadhara had tied peon Gadadhar Kanar, attached to the hostels, to a pole demanding fixation of some hostel problems. The students shot the incident and sent the video to the university authority.
Upon being informed by Gadadhar, hostel warden Professor Bhagirathy Panigrahi reached the hostel and got him freed after promising early solution to their problems.
When contacted, PG council chairman Devi Prasanna Pattanayak pleaded ignorance.
As a prompt action after receiving the letter from non-teaching staff, the vice chancellor held a discussion with the hostel superintendent and hostel warden.
Two different angles are said to be behind this act of hostel inmates. First, their long standing hostel problems are not being addressed despite repeated complaints. Second, the inmates are said to have done this out of joke.
However, it has been alleged that the university authority taking no steps against the mischief mongers that suits the latter. In spite of engaging security staff spending lakhs of rupees, such incidents are becoming new normal here.
