Bhubaneswar, March 29: Powerlifter Pradip Kumar Patra bagged gold in the 66kg category of the ongoing Federation Cup powerlifting tournament at Kapurthala, Sunday. Pradip lifted 230kg in squat, 115kg in benchpress, 240kg in deadlift and a total of 585kg to take top honours.
Anil Kumar of Madhya Pradesh emerged runner-up by lifting 537kg. Bijay Kumar of Chhattisgarh lifted 535kg to finish third.
Pradip had previously won the Asian Strong Man and India Strong Man titles.
Orissa colts clinch title
Orissa girls created history by winning the 18th National Junior Sepak Takraw Championships at Jodhpur, Sunday.
Orissa scraped past Manipur 2-1 in the final to emerge champions. It was a nail-biting affair, but in the end Orissa players got the better of the opposition. Skipper Tulasi Behera and Itishree Samal performed well for Orissa. Earlier Orissa blanked Nagaland 2-0 to enter the summit clash.
Double crown in softball
Orissa boys and girls emerged champions in the Inter-State Softball Championships, which concluded Sunday in Kolkata. Both the teams defeated Manipur, Assam, Nagaland, West Bengal and Bihar to top their respective pools and emerge victorious. Duryodhan Bidika, Mahesh Pattakhandal and Gopinath Bidika in the boys’ team and Prasani Huika and Sunita Bidika in the girls’ squad performed well.
Kalinga Club triumph
Kalinga Club of Bhubaneswar emerged champions of the Gunanidhi Cup football tournament, beating Jay Durga Club 4-1 in the final at the BM High School Ground here Sunday.
Biplab Dehuri of Kalinga Club opened the account in the 30th minutes. Hemant Das restored parity just after two minutes. The winners scored three more goals in the second half through Antu Murmu (49th), Santosh Nayak(55th) and Akash Behera (59th) to script an emphatic win.
