Barang: With a view to controlling the growing population of spotted deer in the Nadankanan Zoological Park (NZP) before it becomes unmanageable to keep them confined to their enclosures, the zoo management has decided to castrate some male members of the species.
As per reports, a-three-member doctors’ team from Pune will reach the NZP Tuesday and impart training to the doctors over here on the procedure of castration of the animals. The zoo authorities have received a letter in this regard.
The team will demonstrate the procedure by castrating some deer and also make the doctors out here aware of the necessary equipment, environment and precautions to be taken after the operation. It is learnt that the workshop will prove helpful for the NZP veterinarians for neutering the animals.
At present, more than 500 spotted deer have been living in enclosure no-68. However, an unexpected rise in their number has become a matter of concern for the zoo authorities.
When asked, deputy director of Nandankanan zoo Jayant Dash said, “The expert team will give us a demonstration of the castration process and we hope our veterinarians will learn adequately to carry out such operations.”
