Puri: There is a piece of good news for athletes and sports lovers. The Central government has approved a plan to construct a multipurpose mega stadium at Talabania here.
Sources said the proposed ultra-modern stadium will have both indoor and outdoor facilities. “The Centre will provide Rs 37.5 crore under the Khelo India scheme for construction of the mega stadium. It has sanctioned Rs 4 crore for the purpose in the first phase,” said a source in the district administration.
According to sources, the administration has initiated the process for building the stadium. It had recently convened a high-level meeting to discuss the project. Local MLA and Revenue Minister Maheswar Mohanty, Collector Aravind Agarwal, Additional Collector Uddhav Chandra Majhi, Sub-Collector Madhusudan Das, District Sports Officer Sarat Mishra and Works Department Executive Engineer Niroj Das were among those present at the meet.
Sources said the stadium will have special outdoor facilities for games like volleyball and football. “The Works department will soon prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the stadium and invite tenders from construction companies. The administration will ensure that the land identified for the project is away from sweat water zone at Talabania,” said an official of the district administration.
According to sources, the administration may acquire landed properties of some private individuals for the mega stadium. “Appropriate steps will be taken for rehabilitation of the evicted families,” added the official.
