Phulbani: Several members of Qui community here in Kandhamal district Saturday threatened a stir against alleged police atrocities on them.
According to reports, Sanatan Pradhan of Bankigia village of Mandakia panchayat under Raikia police limits approached SDPO Amaresh Panigrahi of G Udaygiri to get justice for his niece in a case. The SDPO, instead of hearing the case in detail, allegedly beat him up and made casteist remarks, Sanatan alleged. Though he lodged a complaint with Raikia police over the case, no case has been registered so far, he added.
Left with no option, Sanatan sought help from Qui community Friday. “The community would resort to an agitation unless action is taken against the SDPO by December 20,” said Lambodar Kanhar, the general secretary of the community.
According to the case diary, a youth and his three relatives of Sarangada area had taken Sanatan’s niece with them promising marriage. However, they dropped her back near her house November 9. Aggrieved, the girl informed her uncle Sanatan in this regard. Though Sanatan lodged a complaint with Raikia police, it yielded no results. Later, he visited the police station after two days when G Udaygiri SDPO was present there. Instead of giving a patient hearing, the officer abused them and cast aspersion on their caste. He was also beaten up by the SDPO, Sanatan alleged in his complaint.
When contacted, Raikia IIC Bijay Singh said investigation into the matter is on. SDPO Panigrahi rubbished the charges, saying he had not beaten up any one. PNN
