Sambalpur: A student was penalised with a ‘year back’ while disciplinary action was initiated against 19 other students on charges of ragging the 2nd year students at the prestigious Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Sambalpur.
While the junior students were being harassed since last 15 days, the matter came to the fore after a complaint was lodged with the University authorities Monday, following which the action was taken against the senior students Tuesday.
As per the complainants, the 2nd year students were allegedly harassed by their seniors. They had been instructed to bow down while passing through senior students. Moreover, they were ragged inside the hostel and made to do unnecessary works.
However, things took an ugly turn after some seniors caught a student and chopped off his hair.
“Ragging will not at all be tolerated in the campus. The student who has been penalised with a ‘year back’ will be rusticated soon,” Vice-chancellor Atal Chaudhury said.
Despite strict guidelines set by bodies like University Grants Commission (UGC) to stop ragging incidents across the country, the menace is yet to stop.
