Cuttack: Rajesh Nayak (29th, 31st) scored a brace as SAI-STC opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Odisha Government Press (OGP) in the ‘Silver’ category of the FAO Ist division football league at the Barabati Stadium here, Saturday.
The SAI players dominated the match from the start as they took the lead in the ninth minute when Prabhar Dandsena struck. Rajesh then added two more goals to seal the fate of the match in the first half itself.
However, in the other match of the day of the ‘Gold’ category, Mangala Club played out a 1-1 draw against Young Utkal Club (YUC). After a barren first half Rakesh Sahoo (55th) gave YUC the lead before Ajit Rout equalised for Mangala Club nine minutes later.
MPS, DAV win
Mothers Public School (MPS), Unit-I and DAV Unit-VIII School registered victories over their respective opponents in different matches of the Unilght Inter-School football tournament, which started at the Unit-VI High School Ground here Saturday.
MPS pipped DAV Chandrasekharpur by a solitary goal in a keenly-contested first match. Subhasis Choudhury of MPS scored the only goal of the match. Sekh Wasif Ali of MPS was adjudged man of the match.
In the second match, DAV School Unit-VIII triumphed over Future School Bhubaneswar 2-0. Subham Sameer and Sagar Barik scored a goal each for DAV. Subham bagged the man of the match award.
Parvati selected
Discus thrower Parvati Sethy of Odisha has been selected in the Indian Railways team for the upcoming All India Open National Athletics Meet at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar in September. By virtue of winning a bronze in discus at the ongoing 62nd All India Railways Athletics meet, Parvati found a place in the all India Railways side.
OSJA tribute
Odisha Sports Journalists’ Association (OSJA) members paid rich tribute to late sports journalist Ashok Patnaik on his 20th death anniversary. A function was organised Saturday at the Judo Hall of Bhanjakala Mandap where eminent journalists spoke about the achievements of Patnaik were lauded.
