Bhubaneswar, July 28: Theatre lovers in the city got the rare opportunity to witness the passionate performances of two exceptionally talented artistes – Rajit Kapur and Shernaz Patel – in the play ‘The Siddhus of Upper Juhu’ staged at Rabindra Mandap, Friday. The play was organised by the Zain Foundation as a fundraising event for children with autism. The annual fundraiser, which started three years ago, has been inviting renowned artists to the city. In 2015 the audience applauded Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar in a play called ‘ Kaifi Aur Mein’ which was followed by the master class of Naseeruddin Shan through his most popular play ‘ Einstein’ in 2016. “The Zain Foundation came into being in 2015, to commemorate Zain’s birthday and honour his zest for life. He laid down his arms in 2014 at a cruel battle with cancer. Zain wanted his sibling, Rean, who is a child with autism, to be well looked after, and expressed a wish to make a haven for him and his friends, in the future,” said Gargi Bhattacharya, founder of Zain Foundation. “Over the last two years, the foundation has been engaged in
advocacy work for autistic children in Bhubaneswar through workshops, art exhibitions, rallies, as well as sporadic articles on awareness through print and audio visual vehicles,” she added. ‘The Siddhus of Upper Juhu’ is a comedy rich in realism and satire, directed by Rahul Da Cunha, the Amul Man (brain behind the famous Amul ad campaign). The play is about the extraordinary adventures of an ordinary couple in the Maximum City. Balvinder ‘Bubbles’ Siddhu (Rajit Kapur) and Behroze Siddhu (Shernaz Patel) are an ordinary (if slightly eccentric) middle-aged couple. They find themselves in a bind when their home is burgled, just a few days after Bubbles loses his job. If one has ever lived in a city, one would be able to relate the incidents of the play to immediate life. The magnificent performances by Shernaz and Rajit enthralled the audience. A thrilled Abhina Routray said: “The play perfectly blended comedy and drama. Watching the live performance of artistes like Rajit and Shernaz was a great experience. They are undoubtedly two of the finest actors of Indian theatre and share an impeccable sense of timing.”
