post news network, Bhubaneswar, July 23: The third edition of the International Model United Nations conference (SAIMUN) 2015, one of the eastern region’s most important such event, organised by the SAI International School, was inaugurated by the governor of Orissa SC Jamir, on the school premises, here in the city, Thursday. The conference will span three days.
The programme based on the theme of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ begun with the lightning of the lamp and the unveiling of the SAIMUN logo by the Governor.
In his speech, Jamir said, “Model United Nations is an excellent platform to explore the new horizons and the happenings taking place all around the globe. We are all born in certain parts of the world and may have different physical characteristics, but the whole world is a big family. It is our duty to know about the issues and difficulties the people residing in various parts of the globe are facing and try to find solutions to those.”
Around 60 student delegations from different countries like Thailand, China, Bahrain, Russia, Egypt, Malaysia, Morocco, Poland, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, the USA, Scotland, the Netherlands and Bangladesh are taking part in the programme.
Above 500 students, from across the country, have also joined the three-day event. These students will have an opportunity to interact with the foreign delegates and will exchange ideas on matters related to education and other fields.
The chairman of the school Bijoy Kumar Sahoo welcomed all the delegates and pointed out the importance of the event. “SAIMUN is a platform that is intended to provide the leaders of tomorrow an understanding of the dynamics of the contemporary world, the political, social, economic scenario of the globe and the strategies to ensure a peaceful human existence,” said Sahoo.
The day one of the ‘SAIMUN-2015’ witnessed an enthusiastic participation of the students in all the eight councils, which are the UNCSW (Commission on the Status of Women), NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), SOCHUM (United Nations General Assembly: Social, Humanitarian and Culture), UNHRC (Human Rights Commission), ECOFIN (Economic And Financial Committee), UNESCO, SPECPOL (The Special Political and Decolonization Committee) and UNODC (Office on Drugs and Crimes).
The students taking part in the programme, will perform a demo of all activities that take place at the United Nations. The students will be accompanied by the foreign delegates.
