Bhubaneswar: Woman Fide Master (WFM) Saina Salonika of Orissa bagged a bronze medal in the National Sub-Junior U-15 Girls’ Chess Championships which concluded Monday at Ahmedabad.
Maharashtra girl Divya Deshmukh clinched the title with 9.5 points while Sanskriti Goyal of UP grabbed the silver with nine points.
The state chess star secured 8.5 points from 11 rounds, which included eight wins, a draw and a couple of losses. The medal was Saina’s fifth in Nationals after gold medals in the National U-7 Girls’ Chess Championships in 2010 and National U-9 School Chess Championships in 2012, a silver in the National U-13 Chess Championships in 2016 and a bronze in the National U-11 Chess Championships in 2014.
By clinching the bronze, Saina qualified for the 2018 World Youth Chess Championships in Greece and 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Thailand.

United Youth Sports Club (UYSC) stormed into the final of the Gati Krushna Memorial Football League (Division-B) scripting a 2-0 win over Neelkamal FC (NFC) in the second semifinal here, Monday. Both goals were scored by Jagannath Barik.
Judge appointed
Biswaranjan Sarangi of Orissa has been appointed Monday as the judge of the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2017 at Dhaka, October 11-22. “I am happy over my appointment and looking forward for the tournament,” Biswaranjan stated.
